Interstellar Isomers: The Importance of Bonding Energy Differences
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present strong detections of methyl cyanide (CH3CN), vinyl cyanide (CH2CHCN), ethyl cyanide (CH3CH2CN) and cyanodiacetylene (HC4CN) molecules with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) toward the Sgr B2(N) molecular cloud. Attempts to detect the corresponding isocyanide isomers were only successful in the case of methyl isocyanide (CH3NC) for its JK = 10 − 00 transition, which is the first interstellar report of this line. To determine the spatial distribution of CH3NC, we used archival Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association (BIMA) array data for the JK = 4K−3K (K = 0−3) transitions but no emission was detected. From ab initio calculations, the bonding energy difference between the cyanide and isocyanide molecules is >8500 cm (>12,000 K). Thus, cyanides are the more stable isomers and would likely be formed more preferentially over their isocyanide counterparts. That we detect CH3NC emission with a single antenna (Gaussian beamsize(ΩB)=1723 arcsec ) but not with an interferometer (ΩB=192 arcsec ), strongly suggests that CH3NC has a widespread spatial distribution toward the Sgr B2(N) region. Other investigators have shown that CH3CN is present both in the LMH hot core of Sgr B2(N) and in the surrounding medium, while we have shown that CH3NC appears to be deficient in the LMH hot core. Thus, large-scale, non-thermal processes in the surrounding medium may account for the conversion of CH3CN to CH3NC while the LMH hot core, which is dominated by thermal processes, does not produce a significant amount of CH3NC. Ice analog experiments by other investigators have shown that radiation bombardment of CH3CN can produce CH3NC, thus supporting our observations. Isomerism and Hydrogen Bonding in the Cis-enol Forms of 1-(n-pyridyl)butane-1,3-diones: A Theoretical Study
Molecular structure, isomerism, conformational stability and intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IHB) of cis-enol forms of 1-(n-pyridyl)butane-1,3-diones (nPBD) (n = 2, 3, or 4) have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Energy differences for all possible nPBD cis-enol forms of isomers with respect to the most stable form of the correspondin...
متن کاملA photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio study of the structures and chemical bonding of the B25(-) cluster.
Photoelectron spectroscopy and ab initio calculations are used to investigate the structures and chemical bonding of the B25(-) cluster. Global minimum searches reveal a dense potential energy landscape with 13 quasi-planar structures within 10 kcal/mol at the CCSD(T)/6-311+G(d) level of theory. Three quasi-planar isomers (I, II, and III) are lowest in energy and nearly degenerate at the CCSD(T...
متن کاملQuantum Chemical Investigations on C14C10-Branched-Chain Glucoside Isomers Towards Understanding Self-Assembly
Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out using a Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) in an attempt to investigate the electro-molecular properties of branched-chain glucoside (C14C10-D-glucoside) isomers. The results showed that αconfiguration of pyranoside form is thermodynamically the most stable, while the solution should contain much more β...
متن کاملExploring the Energy Landscapes of Cyclic Tetrapeptides with Discrete Path Sampling
Cyclic tetrapeptides are an important class of biologically active molecules that exhibit interesting conformational dynamics, with slow interconversion of several different structures. We present calculations on their energy landscapes using discrete path sampling. In acyclic peptides and large cyclic peptides, isomers containing cis-peptide groups are much less stable than the all-trans isome...
متن کاملDFT Study of the Jahn-Teller Effect in Cu(II) Chelate Complexes
Density Functional Theory (DFT) in conjuction with the Intrinsic Distortion Path (IDP) is employed to study the Jahn-Teller (JT) effect in all four diastereoisomers of tris(ethylenediamine)copper(II) ([Cu(en)3] ) and tris(ethyleneglycol)copper(II) ([Cu(eg)3] ) complexes. As a consequence of the JT effect all the isomers tetragonally elongate to the C2 configurations. Although there are energy d...
